Signs your solar system has a fault

Many faults don’t announce themselves – the power just keeps coming from the grid. Watch for these.

  • Your bill jumpedA higher bill with the same habits often means the system isn’t generating.
  • Inverter screen is blank or redNo display, a red light or an error code on the inverter.
  • Output well below last yearYour app shows much lower production for the same month, even after cleaning.
  • Isolator or breaker keeps trippingThe solar breaker drops out or a rooftop isolator looks damaged.
  • App offlineMonitoring stopped reporting, so you can’t tell what’s happening.

Quick question

Is your system quietly working for the grid instead of you?

Every day a fault goes unnoticed is a day of power you’ve already paid for and aren’t getting.

Common solar faults we fix

Most problems fall into a handful of categories. Finding which one is the skilled part.

Low or no output

We test each string, connector and the inverter to find exactly where power is being lost.

Inverter errors

Error codes, tripping and blank screens. See inverter repair and replacement.

Damaged panels

Cracked glass, hot spots, delamination and storm or hail damage assessed and replaced where needed.

Isolator and wiring faults

Water-damaged rooftop isolators, failed MC4 connectors and degraded DC cable repaired to Australian standards.

Earth and insulation faults

Moisture or damaged cable can cause isolation errors that shut the inverter down – we locate them.

Monitoring not working

Wi-Fi dongles, routers and app accounts reconnected so you can see your system again.

How a solar repair works

A clear diagnosis first, then a written quote – no surprises.

  1. Tell us the problem

Call or use the form. A photo of the inverter screen or error code helps.

  2. Site assessment

A technician attends and safely isolates the system. An assessment fee applies.

  3. Diagnose

String voltages, insulation resistance, inverter logs and the roof are checked.

  4. Written quote

You get the cause, the fix and the price in writing before any repair.

  5. Repair & test

We repair, re-test and confirm the system is producing again.

What you can safely check vs what needs a technician

Solar panels produce dangerous DC voltage whenever the sun is up. Here’s where to draw the line.

What you can safely doWhat our technician does
InverterRead and photograph the screen or error codeReads fault logs and tests the inverter
SwitchboardCheck whether the solar breaker has trippedFinds why it tripped and fixes the cause
PanelsLook from the ground for damage or heavy dirtTests each string and inspects up close
Wiring & isolatorsDon’t touch – DC can’t be switched off at the panelsIsolates safely and repairs to standards
MonitoringRestart your router and check the app loginReconnects or replaces the Wi-Fi module

Repair or replace?

PartUsually
Rooftop isolatorReplace – cheap part, safety critical
MC4 connectors and DC cableRepair the damaged section
Cracked or hot-spotting panelReplace the panel (matching where possible)
Inverter under warrantyManufacturer claim – we help
Inverter out of warrantyCompare repair, replacement or hybrid upgrade
Wi-Fi / monitoring moduleReconnect or replace the module

If the whole system is old and underperforming, we’ll also show you what an upgrade would cost.

What affects the price?

A site assessment fee covers diagnosis. Any repair is then quoted in writing first. The price depends on:

  • What’s failedAn isolator costs far less than a replacement inverter.
  • Parts and warrantyWarranty claims can cover parts; out-of-warranty parts are quoted.
  • Roof accessTwo storeys and steep pitches need extra safety equipment.
  • LocationTravel to outer or regional areas is listed separately on your quote.

Solar repair FAQs

Do you repair systems installed by other companies?

Yes. Orphaned systems are welcome. A site assessment fee applies, and we give a written quote before any repair work.

How much does a solar repair cost?

A site assessment fee applies to diagnose the fault. You then get a written quote for the repair before any work goes ahead.

Why is my solar producing less than it used to?

Common causes are dirty panels, shading from new growth, a failed string or connector, a damaged panel or an inverter fault. A clean fixes the first; the others need testing to find.

My inverter shows an error – is it safe?

Don’t open the inverter or touch rooftop isolators. Turn the system off at the switchboard following the shutdown procedure on your inverter label, photograph the error and call us.

Can storm or hail damage be claimed on insurance?

Often, yes. We can assess the damage and give you a written report and quote to support your claim.

How quickly can you come out?

Our two full-time service staff answer your call and start resolving issues within five working days. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm.
